If you’re not careful when you’re purchasing for your airfare to your next destination then you could end with some grief when you go to board the plane.
When the fuel crisis came about the airlines began charging a fuel surcharge. Then, they began charging baggage fees to check your luggage and carry-on bags were free. The baggage fees caused passengers to say, “Forget it – I’m not paying to have my bag fly with me” and instead brought carry-on roller suitcases to put in the overhead bins.
This caused several things to happen:
The main airlines have moved to a Basic Economy ticket that is the lowest cost ticket but it restricts passengers on seating, luggage and much more. For those who are looking to pay the least this is important to take note.
Some people may not realize that the lowest cost ticket on airlines like American and Delta means you don’t get to select your seat ahead of time. Yes, you could be that person in the middle seat or the very last seat by the toilet.
You are also restricted on the items you can bring on board. The item (singular) you bring on the plane must fit under the seat in front of you – you have NO access to the overhead bins.
With all this said, when we are looking for the best value for your vacation we generally don't select the basic economy. If you are price comparing our package rates to your go-to site then know that the pricing will be different for sure. We are looking for your best experience with the best value.
You don't have to take my word for it. The photos are linked to the respective airline website for their basic economy policy. Here they are again for your review: American Airlines | Delta Airlines
So what's a consumer to do? Purchase a ticket in the Main cabin if flying economy. Upgrade if possible to economy plus or business/first class. Although I will say our latest experience flying business class to the Caribbean was truly lacking. Other than the large comfortable seat and unlimited drinks it wasn't much of an upgraded experience.
Another thought is that some folks may begin to take advantage of services like Luggage Forward that ship your luggage to your destination rather than it fly with you. You are still paying for luggage to travel but you don't have to deal with it before, during, or after the flight.
Until next time...
