As we welcome Kim to the Sail & Sand Travel team, I wanted to get an idea of what she has experienced as a new travel planner. She has only been part of the travel industry from the consumer side only. Here is our interview - read on - you might be surprised at what you read.
Judy: You recently entered the travel industry and selling travel. What surprised you the most about this job?
Kim: The thing that surprised me most is the amount of training and education that is out there! I never realized or appreciated just how much goes into being a skilled and knowledgeable travel planner! It isn't just point and click to book vacations for people. One must know so much about their clients, travel options and destination details before booking the first trip!
Judy: What are some things you love about this line of work?
Kim: I love to travel so sharing that love and my experience with others is wonderful! I want my clients to have the best time no matter where, when or how long they travel.
Judy: There are a lot of myths out there about being a travel planner... What are some of the top myths about travel planners that have been crushed for you, now that you are one?
Kim: Ooh. Good question! Probably the biggest myth is what I alluded to before ... that it's simply going to Google or Travelocity or some other website and clicking a few buttons. A good travel planner has to know the best resources, the best promotions, the best vendors in order to provide the absolute BEST experience for their client.
Judy: Are you choosing a specialty or are you booking all travel?
Kim: Although I do have areas that I specialize in I will book any experience my client desires. I have vast experience in planning educational travel for student groups and I would still enjoy doing that. I've been fortunate to be able to travel quite a bit so if a client wants to plan a trip to Alaska, Hawaii, Ireland, France or even a cruise to the Mediterranean, I can do that with the experience and knowledge of someone who has been there before. I've even traveled in a convertible on Route 66 so if that is something a client is interested in I would be happy to plan a memorable trip for them!
Author note: At Sail & Sand Travel we are Travel Planners - not travel agents. An agent is someone at a call center who is an order taker. A Travel Planner is someone who gets to know the client desires, and custom builds an itinerary just for them. It may be the same cruise ship, theme park, or resort as others but it's very hands on and completely different. Because the people are different with their own ideas of what they want to experience. No two vacations are exactly the same. "Nothing is ever just a vacation".
