I wasn't looking for a hobby or a side hustle, but something that I could do to help my family (and private school tuition). If I was making an income then that meant I could give to the church, the community and support the local businesses that I enjoyed.
I had no idea the job I was looking for was called being a Travel Agent. I only wanted to do what I was already doing, and loved, and bring home the bacon too.
Fast forward to our last move as an Air Force family back to Williamsburg VA - hubby was assigned to Langley for the 3rd time after being told we would not return to Langley when we left in 1998. I was still searching for a job that I could enjoy and have maximum flexibility.
Then, a friend we had met while stationed in Germany sent me an email explaining she would be selling Disney Destinations as a home-based travel agent and she hoped she would be our travel agent. Wait? What? THIS is how you do what I was doing and get paid? Apparently so. Of course I was happy to hand over any travel planning to her and even referred friends to her services. It seemed obvious to me... if we were going to travel anyway then why not have a fellow military wife plan it out and help to grow her business?
This got me thinking. I began researching Disney Travel Agents. I peppered my friend with questions, which it turns out she was not a fan of receiving. Gulp. (shrug) I had no idea... if I have a question I simply - ask. I sent a job inquiry to her agency hoping we could be "partners in crime", so to speak and was excited. Two weeks later I received a one sentence reply: "We aren't hiring."
Wow, really? They didn't even want to talk to me? It wasn't as if I was an unskilled baboon. I previously worked in a bank for many years, worked in the DoDDs school Europe, have a Bachelor's degree from a great university (Go Sooners), helped families adopt children in China, was a substitute teacher, volunteered in various positions, and I got a one line response. Harsh.
At this time a fellow homeschool mom had signed up with an agency to sell travel from home as well. She was much more receptive to my inquiry and was a wonderful friend to discuss it with me. I sent my inquiry to a couple of agencies that seemed reputable, but they never responded. Only one agency responded - my fellow homeschool mom's agency. Then one day on the Dis Boards it was mentioned about an agency in FL. I looked over their website and phoned the owner, and talked with him for about an hour or more. After the phone call I signed with them. I've been selling travel ever since and learning so much! I could actually hold another BA degree with the amount of information I've had to learn. Of course I also learned about selling other destinations than Disney.
This year I hope to be your travel planner. So what makes me/us different? Lots of things, but here are a few.
"The world is a wonderful place full of interesting architecture, delicious food, and wondrous sights. You should see it - and we should plan it for you."
Until next time...
